Recipe for Healthy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough
What You Need
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 cups white whole wheat flour
- 2/3 cup fine yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/4 teaspoon basil
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon oregano
- 4 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large jar pasta sauce
- 1 small package pepperoni
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1 cup cooked crumbled sausage
- 1 cup diced bell peppers
- 1/2 cup anchovies
- 1 small package shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 small package shredded provolone cheese
- 1 Tablespoon grated parmesan cheese
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
How to Make It
Prepare a pizza pan by lightly coating with cooking spray, and then sprinkling it with cornmeal. Set aside until needed.
Preheat oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit.
Dissolve sugar, yeast in warm water, and then allow it to stand for about 5 or 6 minutes as the mixture becomes foamy.
Using a large mixing bowl, you will add the whole wheat flour, cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper flakes, basil, garlic powder, and oregano. Mix dry ingredients until they are well combined.
After combining the dry ingredients, use your fist to make a well in the center of the dry mixture. Pour the foaming yeast in the hole you make. Using a clean hands or a wooden spoon you will gently stir in the wet yeast mixture until the ingredients are thoroughly combined until the mixture forms a ball.
Prepare a clean area by lightly flouring the surface and then turn the dough out on top of it. Knead the dough for about 10 to 12 minutes or until the dough takes on a smooth elastic texture. Add a little more flour if you need it to prevent the dough from sticking to the surface you are working on.
Add the 4 tablespoons of olive oil to a large mixing bowl and then add the ball of dough. Turn the ball once in order to cover the dough completely. Cover the bowl using plastic food wrap and then place the bowl in a warm dry place for about an hour or so until the ball is doubled in its size.
Punch dough down after allowing the dough to reach room temperature. Stretch onto the prepared pizza pan to form the crust. Gently pinch along the edges to form the rim of the pizza. Sprinkle some cornmeal on top of the crust.
Pour pasta sauce into the pizza and spread evenly. Arrange pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, bell peppers, and anchovies on top of the sauce. Sprinkle on mozzarella, provolone, and parmesan cheeses, and then drizzle the tablespoon of olive oil over the entire pizza.
Place in preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until the edges of the crust are golden brown.
